The Kangaroo Rat is one of the most endearing of the real_kangaroo_ratrodent family. This little rodent belongs to the Heteromyidae Family, which also includes the Pocket Mouse. They are only found in Central and North America. These little animals are neither rats nor mice.

There are 16 species of Kangaroo Rats. Their size is anywhere from 8 to 14 inches long and weigh plush_kangaroo_ratfrom 1 to 5 ounces. They may have more than one litter per year. And depending upon the species each litter has from 1 to 6 young.

The nocturnal Kangaroo Rats live in burrows. The area they live in is sparsely vegetated with sandy soil. Their underground burrows have areas for storing food, sleeping and nesting. Their diet includes seeds and some greens. Baby Kangaroo Rats are born in late spring through early fall.

The Kangaroo Rat's long tails help them keep their balance. The forelegs are short and the hindlegs are long and powerful, very much like a real Kangaroo. When alarmed they can make spectacular leaps, some measuring up to 9 feet. They also use their hindlegs to make a thumping sound, which scientists believe is used to announce their territory, attract a mate or repel an intruder. The enemies of these rodents include foxes, coyotes, owls, snakes, hawks, bobcats and spotted skunks.
