The squirrel family (Sciuridae) includes some 273 species. There are 66 species in the United States and Canada. They include the ground squirrels, tree squirrels, flying and antelope squirrels and chipmunks, marmots and prairie dogs.

The name sciuridae means "shadetail" and refers to the generally large bushy tail that many squirrels have. Of the tree squirrels, this group includes the gray, red and flying squirrels.

Squirrels feed on nuts, seeds, insects and fruits.

Some tree squirrels have litters twice per year and others just one. The litter usually consists of from 3 to 5 young. The gestation period is around 40 to 45 days.The squirrels build large leafy nests high in trees. The Western Gray Squirrel builds a nest with bark and sticks. Tree squirrels prefer woodlands but are found all over in neighborhoods and parks.
