Beagles were originally used as hunting dogs, chasing hares (rabbits) and other small game. They originated in Great Britain. Beagles come from the group of dogs called hounds. Hounds are separated into two mainreal_beagle types: sight hounds and scent hounds. Beagles belong to the second group: scent hounds.

The word Beagle first appeared around 1475 in English literature. The origin of the word is uncertain. There are several possible theories. One is that it comes from the French term beguele, which means open throat, referring to the hounds baying. Another possible source is the Old English, French, or the Gaelic word beag, which means "little." There is also the French beugler, which means to bellow. The Germans have a word, "begele", which means to scold.

Beagles are small dogs, about 13 to 16 inches high and weigh anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds. They come in a variety of colors: white, black, tan, red, lemon and blue mottle. The coat is short and thick.

They are good with children and can be cheerful and affectionate. They make good watchdogs but are not considered good guard dogs. Their life span is from 12 to 13 years.

Who is the world's most famous beagle? Snoopy from Peanuts fame.
