Koalas are members of the Phalangeridae family. They are found in the eastern part of the Australian continent. Almost exterminated for their fur, koala are now protected by strict laws.

The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) looks like a teddy bear, but it is not related to them. It is small at 2-1/2 feet and weighs up to 30 pounds. Koalas are tiny at birth and spend the first part of their life in the mother's pouch.

Koalas are marsupials. The baby at six months clings to its mother's back and remains dependent for the first year. A koala is full grown at the age of four. They can live to the age of 20. They feed on the foliage of the eucalyptus tree and the blue gum.
