Newfoundland Dog Plush Toys

There are a variety of theories about the real newfoundlandorigins of the Newfoundland. Some feel it has Nordic origins. Others that it is from British origins coming from Tibetan mastiffs and breeding with local dogs from Newfoundland. And also the belief that it is related to the Labrador.

Males are approximately 28 inches high at the shoulder and weigh about 145 pounds; the females are 26 inches high at the shoulder and weigh about 115 pounds.

Newfoundland's have large wide heads, deep-set brown eyes, and small ears that lie close to the head. They have a big barrel chest. The coat is usually black, dense and water-resistant. The Newfoundland's feet are webbed; they are excellent swimmers. As a matter of fact they have a history of rescuing people from drowning.

Today, Newfoundlands are watchdogs and companion dogs.

Newfoundlands are gentle, protective and love children. (In the Peter Pan story, Nana the dog was a Newfoundland.) They make good watchdogs. They have a tendency to drool and their coat needs brushing. Shedding occurs in spring and fall.

This breed does need regular exercise. They can get overweight. They have a short life span (8-10 years) so exercise is important to keep them healthy.
