Retrievers are hunting dogs. They are one of the most popular breeds in the United States, claims the American Kennel Club. The Golden Retriever is about 24 inches high and weighs about 70 pounds.

If their master is a hunter, they must learn to retrieve the game the hunter shoots, hence their name.

The Golden works well on land or in water. He is also an excellent guide and assitance dog and is used in search and rescue efforts, also.

They make wonderful companion dogs and are good with children. They are very intelligent and eager to please their owner.

The Golden Retriever was bred in the Scottish Highlands. Several breeds to were used to develope the Golden Retriever that we know today, which included the Tweed Water Spaniel (now extinct), the Irish Setter, and Bloodhound.

These golden yellow dogs have colors ranging from light to dark gold.
