A dog similar to the Dalmatian called a Bengal pointer existed in England in 1700. And some claim the dog is a Croatian breed. In the 1800s the Dalmatian was used as a carriage dog. They trotted beside carriages and then guarded them when unattended. They have also been used as a fireman mascot, bird dog, retriever, guard dog, war dog and more.

Dalmatians are about 23 inches high and weigh about 54 pounds. The base color is white with black or liver spots. Puppies are born all white.

Dalmatians are high energy dogs and need lots of exercise. Apartment dwellers should think twice before adopting a Dalmatian unless they promise to take their dog out for long walks Dalmatians are good with children; they also make good watch dogs. Bored Dalmatians can be destructive.

The Dalmatian lifespan is from 10 to 12 years. They are prone to several illnesses, such as deafness, urinary stones and skin allergies.
