The Chow is a very real_chowold breed originating in China. There are likenesses of it on pottery and sculptures of the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 BC to 22 AD); other artifacts indicate that the Chow was a much older breed and may have come originally from the Arctic Circle, migrating to Mongolia, Siberia and China.

Here is an old Chinese fable that explains how the Chow got his blue/black tongue: When God was painting the sky blue, He spilled a few drops of paint as he worked. The Chow followed along behind, licking up the paint and from that day on, the Chow Chow has had a blue tongue.

How did the Chow get its name? Sailors bringing the dogs back from the east called them Chow Chow, a slang term that was used to describe all kinds of items that were carried by the ships. The Chow came to America in the late 1700s.

Chow Chows are quiet and reserved, strong willed and stubborn. They are affectionate with their owners. They are suspicious of strangers and territorial; they will protect their homes and families.

Chow Chows are generally between 17 and 20 inches at the shoulders and weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. Chows come in a variety of colors: red, cinnamon, black, blue and cream.

The plush toy Chow Chow shown at top is the Douglas Taya Chow Chow dog. The Chow Resin Picture Frame is from E&S Imports. Find these Chow gifts at the Jeannie's Cottage Gift Shop.
