bobwhite_pictureThe Northern Bobwhite, (Colinus virginianus) is a rusty brown bird streaked below. The face is alternating stripes of black and white (males) or brown and buff (females). The tail is short. It is about 10 inches tall.

Bobwhites like to congregate in groups called coveys. They feed on corn, grain and seeds.

The voice is a clear, whistled, bob-white; the emphasis on the white... bob-WHITE.

The female scratches out a hollow hidden in high grass or weeds and lays her clutch of from 7 to 20 white unmarked eggs. The incubation period is about 23 days.

This bird is found primarily on the eastern half of the United States and south to Guatemala. It prefers to live in brushlands, roadsides, farms and open woodlands. It has been introduced into the northwest USA.
