The Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) lives in Arctic waters. It is a very large seal; both male and female have tusks. Walruses are anywhere from 9 to 12 feet long and weigh from 1800 pounds (females) to 2700 pounds (males).

Walruses are social animals and live in groups. They are bottom feeders, living on clams, whelks, and sea cucumbers and other sea life that lives in sediments at about 230 feet below the water. They do not actually eat the shells, but can suck the meat from the shell.

Walrus have their young during the months of April through June. The gestation period is about 12 months. The calf will stay with its mother for about two years. The lifespan of the walrus in the wild is from 16 to 30 years.
